NY, NY, United States (AHN Sports) – Jose Reyes sat in a barber’s chair during a live show on the MLB Network to undergo the necessary, cuts of three years worth of locks in order to play for his new team, the Miami Marlins.

“It’s been three years with this hair,” Reyes said on the program. “I’ve been through a lot with this hair.”

The Marlins have a policy against long hair, so Reyes sat patiently getting his locks trimmed.

“I can’t wait to get to spring training and get together with my new team,” Reyes said, anyway. “It’s a new family.”

Reyes expects one thing to remain the same as it was with his former team, the New York Mets. The shortstop expects tons of triples and steals with the Marlins.

Florida fans will be excited to watch their new player, as Reyes led the NL in batting average at .337 and in triples with 16 last season.

Reyes auctioned off the dreadlocks on eBay with the proceeds going to the Make-A-Wish foundation.

“People said I look good in the studio,” Reyes said with a laugh. “But it doesn’t feel that good.”

Linda Young – AHN News Writer

Washington, DC, United States (AHN) – U.S. Sen. Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) announced on Friday that the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation would restore funding to Planned Parenthood for breast cancer screenings. The announcement comes after a nationwide firestorm of criticism erupted over Komen’s announcement this week that it would cut funding to Planned Parenthood because the organization was “under investigation.”

Lautenberg said he spoke by telephone with Nancy Brinker, founder and CEO of the Komen Foundation. He said that during the call he confirmed that the Komen Foundation will restore its funding to Planned Parenthood for breast cancer screenings and that Komen will clarify its policy to ensure that only organizations found guilty in a criminal investigation would be ineligible for funding.

“With these changes to their policy, Susan G. Komen for the Cure is depoliticizing its grant-making process and refocusing itself back on its core mission: saving women’s lives. The Komen Foundation is too critical to the fight against breast cancer to give up on, and I hope to see all women’s health groups put politics aside and again work together on their shared missions,” Lautenberg said in a statement. “I am pleased that critical funding will be allowed to flow from the Komen Foundation to Planned Parenthood and to any organization that helps further the fight against breast cancer.”

Earlier in the week, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, a Republican, announced he would match new donations to Planned Parenthood up to $250,000 in an effort to replace the lost Komen funding. His offer sparked a spate of giving by individuals across the country.

In addition, many people reportedly told the Komen Foundation that they would no longer donate to Komen.

Yesterday, Lautenberg and Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) led a group of 26 senators who called on Brinker to reconsider her organization’s decision to stop giving Planned Parenthood grants to fund breast cancer screenings, the senator’s office said in a statement.

Komen pulled the funding earlier this week on the grounds that Planned Parenthood was under investigation by by a U.S. senator from Florida who wants to look into the organization because he is opposed to abortions. It was not a criminal investigation.

Planned Parenthood says 3 percent of the medical services it provides are abortions. It is the largest single abortion provider in the U.S., which has made it a target of anti-choice groups. However, no federal money goes toward abortion services.

Planned Parenthood provides health care and cancer screenings for millions of poor men and women who do not have access to any other health care.

Indianapolis, IN, United States (AHN) – The spiritual side of football has never been more apparent than during this season with the very public display of religious devotion and God-giving gratitude displayed by the iconic Tim Tebow.

The Denver Bronco’s quarterback won’t be playing at Super Bowl XLVI on Feb. 5 in Indianapolis. No, this year’s big game pits the New England Patriots against the New York Giants in what is expected to be the most watched game in television history.

One can safely bet that many prayers will be said, a few “hail Mary” passes will be tossed, and promises will be made that almost certainly will never kept in a bid to have the favorite team take home the coveted trophy and title. A few other choice words are also bound to be uttered.

But, when the winner emerges, and the thanks begin, odds are that God and family will be remembered first.

According to the online betting site Sportsbook.com, the odds that the player selected as MVP will thank God are 5-4; his teammates, 2-1; he doesn’t thank anyone, 5-2; his coaches 4-1; and the odds he will thank his family are the long shot at 5-1.

The odds that the winning coach will thank his team are 2-3; the odds he thanks God are 6-5; that he thanks his coaching staff and owner are 4-1; the odds he doesn’t thank anyone are 8-1, the same as the odds that he thanks his family.

Indianapolis, IN, United States (AHN) – The most coveted, most sought after, hottest, and hardest to get souvenir heading in to the Feb. 5 Super Bowl is a hand-knitted scarf.

What makes the scarves so difficult to wrap hands around are that they are not actually for sale. The knit one, purl two blue and white hand knitted scarves come with the Super Bowl XLVI emblem sewn on. An attached postcard reveals the name of the volunteer who created the scarf.

Some 13,000 scarves were made, thanks to knitting clubs and grandmothers, for what football fans call the biggest sporting event of the year. However, the number knitted exceeded the number of volunteers (8,000 this year), so the additional scarves were presented to the players.

Some scarves made it to the “black” market and are selling upwards of several hundreds of dollars.

It is the hunt, not the cold, that has many racing to get the limited edition scarves. Temperatures leading up to Sunday’s big game between the New England Patriots and the New York Giants have been hovering in the 60s.
