Namestovo, Slovakia (AHN Sports) – Former NHL player Richard Zednik and some youth hockey players narrowly avoided tragedy Sunday at a newly opened skating rink.

Zednik and the young players were pulled off the ice just before the roof collapsed from the weight of snow and ice.

Zednik, who played 13 seasons in the NHL, is an ambassador for hockey in his native Slovakia. He was on the ice with the young players when bits of ice began to fall through the roof. Just as Zednik and the children were taken off the rink the roof collapsed.

Zednik played for the Washington Capitals, Montreal Canadiens, New York Islanders and Florida Panthers during his NHL career. While playing for the Panthers in 2008, his neck was slashed by a skate.
