Record number to participate in Empire State Building Run-Up

New York, NY, United States (AHN) – When people think of New York and running events, the legendary New York City Marathon is often what comes to mind first. However, the iconic city is also the host of one of the most epic climbs–The Empire State Building Run-Up.
New York City is a trend setter, and often goes against the grain. In the Big Apple, they don’t climb mountains; they climb skyscrapers. And this annual event is the epitome of endurance, speed, agility and determination.
Participants, some of whom tackle the 1,576 stairs, about eight inches high, two at a time, race up the 86 floors and finish at the Empire State Building Observatory, the top of the most famous skyscraper in the world.
Last year’s men race winner Thomas Dold is returning. He will be chasing both his seventh title and the step record of 9:33, set in 2003 by Paul Crake.
In the women’s field, the course record is held by Andrea Mayr with a time of 11:23, set in 2006. Favorites this year include four-time winner Cindy Harris and three-time winner Suzy Walsham.
The event takes place Wednesday night, and the record field includes some 650. Elite entrants are secured a spot, and general entry spots are allocated in proportion to the percentage of metro, national and international applicants.
Some motivational folks love to say the journey is all about the climb, not the destination. But, there are few more breathtaking sites than the one from this event’s finish line, atop the Empire State Building.
